CDC’s new school guidelines play down risk, play up attendance

If that weren't enough, further down in the document, there's a section entitled "Why is it Important to Open Schools for In-Person Instruction?" That's followed by "Schools play a critical role in supporting the whole child, not just the academic achievement of students." All told, about a quarter of the 5,000 word document is spent on text that promotes the importance of opening schools for in-person instruction.

Portland protesters on being detained, chased by federal agents as situation intensifies

Trump had praised the work of federal agents in Portland at a news conference Monday. “We’re going to have more federal law enforcement, that I can tell you. In Portland, they’ve done a fantastic job,” Trump said.

Although the president may be pleased, others are not. On July 16, the ACLU’s interim executive director in Oregon, Jann Carson, said that the grabbing of people by agents and putting them into unmarked vehicles is typically referred to as kidnapping.

More people in the US are hospitalized with Covid-19 than at almost any other time

What’s clear is that Covid-19 has migrated across the country to many more regions in the three months since. In the spring, hospitalizations were overwhelmingly concentrated in the Northeast, but now more than half of hospitalized Covid-19 patients are in the South. The West has also seen the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients double since April, while the Northeast now accounts for fewer than 5,000 of the nearly 60,000 current hospitalizations.

Portland’s protests were supposed to be about black lives. Now, they’re white spectacle.

Unfortunately, “spectacle” is now the best way to describe Portland’s protests. Vandalizing government buildings and hurling projectiles at law enforcement draw attention — but how do these actions stop police from killing black people? What are antifa and other leftist agitators achieving for the cause of black equality? The “Wall of Moms,” while perhaps well-intentioned, ends up redirecting attention away from the urgent issue of murdered black bodies.
