Are "COVID Deaths" Actually Being Caused by Something Else?

I've seen a lot of buzz on social media about a new report from the CDC on the COVID-19 death rate. Specifically, the CDC report mentions that only 6% of COVID deaths had no other contributing factors. Does that mean 94% of what are being reported as COVID deaths are actually due to other causes? A medical doctor examines the report and explains what it is really saying.

Global Warming Hiatus?

During a December interview with NPR's Steve Inskeep, presidential candidate Ted Cruz turned the tables and asked the reporter a question.

"Let me ask you a question, Steve. Is there global warming, yes or no?"

"Absolutely, sure," Inskeep replied.

The Monty Hall Problem

The television game show Let's Make a Deal first aired in 1963. Host Monty Hall would give contestants a chance to win a modest prize, then a chance to trade their prize for a better prize. In one scenario Hall presented the contestand with three doors. Behind one of the doors was a big prize, and behind the other two were Zonks, items of little or no value.

Simpson's Paradox

Simpson's paradox is named after statistician Edward Simpson, who first described the effect in a 1951 paper titled The Interpretation of Interaction in Contingency Tables. Simpson described a scenario where the results of a scientific study appear to support one conclusion, but when the results are split to account for a particular variable, the results show a different conclusion.
